16 down, 10 to go: Outstanding 2022 regular season stats


The NASCAR Cup Series enters its only weekend of the 2022 season. With 16 races completed, take a look at the outstanding regular season stats. There are 10 races left before the playoffs begin, starting with a trip to Nashville Superspeedway on June 26 (5 p.m. ET on NBC/NBC Sports App, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Kurt Busch is the only Stage 2 winner to win the race (Kansas Speedway).


Michael McDowellSix top 10s and 38 laps led are his best results in a season.

– Twelve different winners in 16 races, the second highest number ever. The maximum is 13 in 2003.

Denny HamlinThe 48 non-championship wins are second all-time after Junior Johnson’s 50. Johnson is inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Kyle Busch won at 24 different tracks, adding to the Bristol Motor Speedway ground this year. Most of all time, Richard Small on 50 different tracks.

— Twelve drivers have won in 2022. Only four of them have more than four top five finishes: Ross Chestnut (Seven), Kyle Busch (six), Kyle Larson (six) and Joey Logan (five).

— Five drivers have won their first pole in 2022 (Austin Cindric, Christopher Bell, Chasing Briscoe, Cole Custer and Chris Buescher), the most since six in 2001.

— Four drivers obtained their first victory in 2022 (Austin Cindric, Chasing Briscoe, Ross Chestnut and Daniel Suarez), the most since five in 2011. In 16 races, however, four is the most since 10 in 1950, the Cup Series’ second season.

— Twenty drivers have won since Kevin Harvick the last did. Harvick is on a 59-race winless streak, the second longest of his career. He had a 115-race winless run between 2007 and 2010.

— There are eight drivers who won in 2021 and did not win in 2022 (Martin Truex Jr., ryan blaney, AJ Allmendinger, Aric Almirola, Brad Keselowski, Bubba Wallace, Christopher Bell and Michael McDowell).

Cole Custer failed to finish in the top 10 in the first 16 races this season. His best finish was 11th at Auto Club Speedway. His last top 10 was at Dover Motor Speedway in May 2021, 39 races ago.

William Byron is the only driver to complete 500 laps in the lead, leading the Cup Series at 570. The closest driver is Chase Elliot to 471. Only three drivers are above the 400 lap mark, adding Ross Chestnut at 426.

– The longest ranking streak in the top 10 right now is two, held by ryan blaney and Ross Chestnut. The longest streak in the top 10 by a driver this year is five races, three times: Chase Elliot, Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell.

– All four drivers in last season’s Championship 4 have at least three fewer top-five finishes from 16 races in 2022 compared to 2021. Kyle Larson six against nine. Martin Truex Jr. two against six. Denny Hamlin three against nine. Chase Elliot three against eight.

– A single driver has more all-time winless finalists than Tyler Red Dickwhich has five of 90 career starts. GC Spencer seven in 415 career starts. Most all-time runners-up before a win is 12 per James Hyltonwho earned his first victory in his 187th career start at Richmond Raceway in 1970.

— Since 1949, Hendrick Motorsports totaled 37 all-time wins after a weekend off. next best, Richard Childress Racing at 27 years old.

Hendrick Motorsports is the only team to complete 1,000 laps in the lead this season, currently at 1,332. The next best is Joe Gibbs Race at 848.

– It took Hippodrome racing 52 races to claim three wins. Fewest races it took for a new team to win three races: 33, Team Penske in 1975.

Hippodrome racing and 23XI Race both started in 2021 and expanded to two teams in 2022. Each has two second-place finishes and five stage wins.

Hippodrome racingThe three 2022 wins came from two drivers (Ross Chastain, two; Daniel Suárez, one) and two crew chiefs (Phil Surgen and Travis Mack) who had never won in the Cup Series before this year. Chastain, Suárez and Surgen had already finished second, and Mack finished fourth.

— The last step to Talladega Superspeedway was without warning. It is the only final stage in 2022 to be free of any warnings.

Charlotte Motor SpeedwayThe race lasted 5 hours, 13 minutes and 6 seconds. It is only the second time in the past 55 years that a Cup Series race has lasted longer than 5 hours and 13 minutes.

– Since the start of the stage era in 2017, at least three drivers have won their first win of the season in the last 10 races of the regular season. There were three in 2017 and 2020-21, four in 2018 and five in 2019. If the trend continues, there will be at least 15 winners in the 2022 regular season.

– The pass for the win came in the last 10 laps of 12 of the 16 races in 2022. The only races that had a longer leader stretch were Phoenix Racetrack (Chase Briscoe led the final 24), Martinsville Motor Speedway (William Byron led the final 83), Dover Motor Circuit (Chase Elliott led the final 53) and Sonoma Tour (Daniel Suárez led the final 26). In 2021, there were just six race winners decided in the final 10 laps across 16 races.
