The rumors have been a bit muted for a week or so, and there’s a reason for that – most of the world’s best players are away with their national teams for the Nations League, World Cup qualifiers or friendlies . But this week the players will start to return to their clubs and already the rumors are starting to heat up again. As expected, Tottenham Hotspur is right on target.
Thanks to Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici, the once derided Italian football media ecosystem is now taking on new importance, especially as one of Spurs’ top targets is Italian and Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro. Fight. (However, continue to be skeptical of anything coming out of Italy that doesn’t go through Gianluca DiMarzio.) We know the drill now because these rumors have been rumbling for some time: Bastoni loves Inter and doesn’t want leave but could do so anyway because Inter are lean and could push him out of Spurs if they make a big enough offer.
That hasn’t changed. In fact, Fabrizio Romano has new quotes from Bastoni himself that just throw the box down the road.
Alessandro Bastoni told Rai Sport: “I have a two-year contract with Inter, so I’m relaxed. The club haven’t told me anything”. #transfers
“I’m just waiting to go on vacation after that and then start pre-season with Inter.”

It sounds bad, but it’s all sound and fury, meaning nothing. If you’re a professional footballer with strong ties to a big deal outside your club, that’s exactly the kind of statement you’d make before there was any real news about your transfer. “I am an Inter Milan player.” Yes, buddy, you are. For the moment.
But there are reports tonight from Italy that could affect the reckoning of everything. The first comes courtesy of Alfredo Pedulla, who claims Turin defender Gleison Bremer has decided he wants to go to Inter, and the two clubs are closing in on a deal.

That’s important, because Bremer is going to cost a fair amount of money, and it’s not unreasonable to suspect that if true, it’s a sign that Inter may be pre- spend the money from a future sale of Bastoni to Tottenham.
However, there is also a new wrinkle: Sky Italia (via Get Italian Football News) are also reporting that Spurs are in the process of agreeing a deal with Villarreal for Pau Torres, which could include midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.
Tottenham are working on a deal for Pau Torres and the move will involve Giovani Lo Celso, Sky Italia report.

Bastoni may be the new star right now, but Spurs really wanted Torres last summer and didn’t get him and he’s also a very, very good defender. That doesn’t mean Spurs are giving up their pursuit of Bastoni, but it most likely means Paratici is fielding multiple targets (as he likes to do) in case a deal for Bastoni falls through. There have been similar links recently with Barcelona’s Belgian defender Clement Lenglet, as well as Lille’s Sven Botman.
What does it mean? Friends, I have no idea. I think Spurs probably want Bastoni if there’s any chance they can get him, and he’d be a slam dunk at all costs. But having multiple options is a good thing. If Spurs somehow end up with Pau Torres for a good price (with Gio the other way), well, I could certainly live with that eventuality. Or there could be something else coming out of nowhere.
Anyway, this LCB position is of extreme importance for Conte, Paratici and Spurs. Conte will want that person signed, sealed and delivered by the start of pre-season, so I doubt we’ll have to wait any longer. Buckle up.
