Long before leading the NBA, Adam Silver was an enthusiastic young staffer whose duties included opening mail, writing memos and carrying large stacks of shiny photos of Bill Russell – all important, but nothing special. gratifying as the last.

Russell, of course, was notoriously reluctant to sign autographs, preferring a conversation or a handshake to a scribbled signature as a way to connect with people.
