DC United acquire Chilean winger Martín Rodríguez with targeted allocation

DC United have signed Chilean winger Martín Rodríguez on a permanent transfer using Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) from Altay SK in the Super Lig, the top division of Turkish football, pending receipt of his P visa -1 and its international transfer certificate (ITC). When the Major League Soccer secondary transfer window officially opens on July 7, Rodríguez will be added to the Blacks and Reds roster.

We’re getting a proven striker who has won several caps with the Chilean national team and experience at top clubs in Liga MX We are delighted to add someone with his level of experience and ability, and we believe he will be an impact player for us from the start.

The Chilean joins the Blacks and Reds after spending the last season with Altay SK in Turkey. Rodríguez was signed by Altay SK from Colo Colo, Chilean First Division, on July 30, 2021. He made his debut for the side against Kayserispor in the Super Lig on August 14, 2021 in a 3-0 victory. Rodríguez scored his first goal the following match in a 4–1 win over Alanyaspor on 21 August 2021. During his time with the club, Rodríguez scored three goals and registered two assists in 31 appearances in all competitions.

Before joining Altay SK, the winger played in the Liga MX, the top division of Mexican football, with four different clubs. In 2017, Rodríguez was sold to CD Cruz Azul in Colo Colo’s Liga MX where he scored six goals and registered four assists in 50 total appearances. During his time with CD Cruz Azul, Rodríguez was loaned out to UNAM Pumas de Liga MX on July 1, 2018 and was signed on a permanent transfer by them a year later on July 1, 2019.

During the winger’s time with UNAM Pumas, he completed two loan spells with Monarcas Morelia on January 4, 2020 and with Mazatlan FC on July 1, 2020, with both teams competing in the Liga MX. Rodríguez has managed four goals and one assist in 13 total appearances for Monarcas Morelia and six assists in 17 appearances for Mazatlan FC. He returned to UNAM Pumas on December 31, 2020 before being sold back to Colo Colo on July 30, 2021. During his time with UNAM Pumas, Rodríguez scored five goals and six assists in 51 appearances.

The 27-year-old started his career with the Huachipato youth academy before being promoted to the Chilean first division first team on January 1, 2011. In 42 games, he scored two goals and registered seven assists decisive for the club before being signed. by Colo Colo in 2015. The Chilean scored two goals on his debut for Colo Colo on July 25, 2015, in a 2-1 win against Union Española and managed to register eight goals and five assists in all competitions during his time there.

Rodríguez represented Chile where he made his national team debut on September 10, 2014, aged just 20. He scored his first international goal on 25 June 2017 against Australia in a 1-1 draw at the 2017 Confederations Cup. The winger helped Chile take second place in the tournament after losing to Germany 1-0 in the final. In total, Rodríguez has scored one goal and registered two assists in 12 appearances for Chile.
