PSG transfer window priorities: Mbappe could exclude Neymar; Al-Khelaifi says the era of ‘bling-bling’ is over

Paris Saint-Germain will likely be one of the busiest European clubs this summer with a new era overseen by Luis Campos and Christophe Galtier after Kylian Mbappé has extended his contract and Mauricio Pochettino was fired with Leonardo. Nuno Mendes has already been secured permanently with Vitinha who is expected to follow from FC Porto and Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan as good as Renato Sanches (Lille OSC) and Hugo Ekitike from Stade de Reims all interesting.

“The dream is one thing and the reality is another,” CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi told Le Parisien of this summer’s changes. “Maybe we should change our slogan because ‘Dream Bigger’ is good, but we have to be realistic first and foremost. We don’t want to be flashy and bling anymore — no more glitter. But every year we wonder how to do better.

“I can tell you that we expect all the players to do more than last season, much more,” added the Qatari. “They all have to be 100%. Obviously we weren’t good enough to go far. The objective for next season is clear and that is to go 200% every day, give everything for the shirt, You have to be humble again. You have to be disciplined on and off the pitch and anyone who wants to stay in their comfort zone and not fight will be sidelined. We want players who are proud to represent PSG and ready to fight.”

We break down PSG’s roster and look ahead to this summer.

PSG Goalkeepers Prospects

  • Stay : Gianluigi Donnarumma
  • Leaving: Alphonse Areola, Marcin Bulka and Alexandre Letellier
  • Uncertain: Keylor Navas and Sergio Rico
  • Possibility of loan: Denis Franchi

If there’s one club in Europe that doesn’t need another goalkeeper, it’s PSG. With so many good quality options on the books, it makes sense that this summer will be more about establishing a recognized hierarchy rather than bringing in someone else. Whether it’s Navas or Donnarumma, Galtier must pick a clear No. 1 pick and their backup must be happy to fill that role. Rico has done that in the past but neither the Costa Rican nor the Italian will be happy to split time once again.

Ideal move: Identifying a clear starting stopper, backing them up and potentially setting clear expectations around playing time. If that means moving multiple players around and bringing in a reserve goalkeeper who accepts that is their role, so be it . However, between Navas and Donnarumma, there is already enough starting quality.

PSG defense outlook

  • Stay : Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi, Nuno Mendes
  • Leaving: Layvin Kurzawa and Colin Dagba
  • Uncertain: Presnel Kimpembe, Sergio Ramos, Thilo Kehrer, Abdou Diallo and Juan Bernat
  • Possibility of loan: El Chadaille Bitshiabu
  • Market target: Milan Skriniar

Ideal move: In this position, only Marquinhos is truly guaranteed to remain in central defense while the right and left sides are two rare positions which should be fixed for next season at least at the level of their holders. A few peripheral figures could go from uncertain to leave while Kimpembe should logically be maintained and Ramos’ experience and leadership could be considered essential by Galtier and Campos.

PSG Midfielder Prospects

  • Stay : Marco Veratti
  • Leaving: Angel Di Maria and Rafinha
  • Uncertain: Leandro Paredes, Danilo Pereira, Georginio Wijnaldum, Ander Herrera, Julian Draxler, Idrissa Gueye, Eric Junior Dina Ebimbe and Pablo Sarabia
  • Loan possibilities: Xavi Simons, Edouard Michut, Ismael Gharbi and Nathan Bitumazala
  • Market targets: Vitinha, Renato Sanches and Seko Fofana

This is the main area that needs attention from Campos this summer. Vitinha and Sanches’ early moves could give the unit a new look, but much will depend on who is ultimately moved, with even Paredes unsafe despite PSG adding an extra year to his contract via an option. Verratti being the only character guaranteed to stay makes sense considering the team’s midfielder often feels like the Italian all on his own.

“Luis Campos will focus on the first team,” explained Al-Khelaifi. “We want to discover new talents and new markets. We have to explore new directions and find players who will be proud to be in Paris playing for the club and here only for football. We are going to create an advisory committee. This will be a council of five to seven high-level personalities in love with PSG. People who have ideas and who are ready to contribute their experience.”

Ideal move: A purge of dead wood in this position is a must with increased playing time needed for many youngsters as well. Once it becomes clear, a midfielder such as RC Lens’ Seko Fofana could appeal depending on the price.

PSG Attack Prospects

  • Stay : Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi
  • Leaving: Mauro Icardi
  • Uncertain: Neymar and Arnaud Kalimuendo
  • Possibility of loan: Kenny Nagera
  • Market target: Hugo Ekitike

Only Mbappe and Messi are truly guaranteed to be part of PSG’s planning in attack for the coming season, but Neymar could change that given how difficult it is to get him going and how a new mindset could change it. transform into something new. signature. Icardi is pushed out while Kalimuendo could be cleared through after impressing with Lens while Ekitike is in sight.

“My goal for the coming years is to have only Parisian players in the squad,” Al-Khelaifi said of the French talent. “There is so much talent in our region. The best players in our region deserve to play for PSG. It will take time, but it’s a goal. We want players who love the club, love to fight and love win. We want that mentality to spread throughout the club.”

Ideal move: Some clarity regarding Neymar’s future and whether he can be counted on is vital as he would transform the look of this attack. There will be a need to plan for life after Messi beyond this season and Mbappe is now the main player around which PSG will be built. A versatile young striker with high potential but already performing at a good level would make more sense.
