Rally Tally Day 4: Third death, 10 injured reported in seven new crashes near Sturgis Motorcycle Rally – Mitchell Republic

STURGIS, SD — A third fatal crash and 10 additional injuries were reported in seven new crashes detailed on day four of the annual Rally Tally.

During the nine days of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the South Dakota Highway Patrol releases daily reports of accidents and crime in and around the city of Sturgis.

Known as the Rally Tally, the daily release includes information on investigations conducted solely by the South Dakota Highway Patrol and does not include statistics compiled by other organizations, including the Sturgis Police Department and various area county sheriff’s offices.

Released at noon MDT each day of the rally, the information below includes information compiled from 6:00 a.m. Tuesday through 6:00 a.m. Wednesday.

One dead and three injured in three-bike accident at Scenic
SCENIC, SD – At approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Pennington County authorities were called to Mile 88 of South Dakota Highway 44, within the city limits of Scenic, to a report of an accident of three motorcycles.

Preliminary accident information indicates that three motorcycles were heading east on SD 34 when a 2019 Harley-Davidson Trike came to a stop on the shoulder of the road and then attempted to turn around. A 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with the tricycle and a 2018 Harley-Davidson tricycle then rammed the motorcycle.

The 66-year-old passenger from the 2018 trike was pronounced dead at the scene. The 71-year-old driver suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Rapid City Hospital. Neither of them was wearing a helmet.

The 62-year-old motorcycle driver suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Rapid City Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

The 64-year-old driver of the 2019 tricycle suffered minor injuries and was taken to Rapid City Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. The 58-year-old passenger was not injured. She was wearing a helmet.

One injured while turning at a major freeway intersection near Custer
CUSTER STATE PARK – Shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Custer State Park officials were called to the intersection of South Dakota Interstates 87 and 89 to a report of a bicycle accident.

Preliminary information about the accident indicates that a 2009 Harley-Davidson FLHRC motorcycle was heading south on SD 83 when the 51-year-old driver failed to negotiate a turn. She suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Custer Hospital. She was not wearing a helmet.

Vehicle and trailer dump near Sturgis, two injured
STURGIS, SD – Shortly before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Meade County authorities were called to a nondescript area about eight miles east of Sturgis to a report of a vehicle accident.
Preliminary information about the accident indicates that a 2006 Nissan Titan vehicle towing a trailer was heading east when the driver lost control. The vehicle and trailer overturned in the eastbound lane.

The 52-year-old driver was slightly injured and the 57-year-old passenger was partially ejected and sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. Both were taken to hospital in Hot Springs. None of the occupants were wearing seat belts.

One injured after hitting rocks on Vanocker Canyon Road
STURGIS, SD — Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Meade County officials were called to mile marker 11 of Vanocker Canyon Road, about six miles south of Sturgis, to a report of a bicycle accident.

Preliminary crash information indicates a 2009 Harley-Davidson FLF motorcycle was traveling north on Vanocker Canyon Road when the driver failed to negotiate a left curve. The motorcycle left the road to the right and hit some rocks.

The 60-year-old driver suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries and was transferred to Sturgis Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

One injured after biker hits another near Sturgis
STURGIS, SD — At approximately 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Meade County authorities were called to Mile 79 of South Dakota Highway 79 to a two-bike accident report.

Preliminary accident information indicates that a 2019 Harley-Davidson FLHXS motorcycle was traveling south on SD 79 when it struck a 2019 Indian Chieftain motorcycle.

The 61-year-old driver of the Harley-Davidson suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in Sturgis. The 62-year-old Indian Chieftain motorcycle driver was not injured. Neither of them was wearing a helmet.

One injured after losing control of a bicycle near Sturgis
STURGIS, SD – Shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, Meade County authorities were called to Pleasant Valley Road, about five miles south of Sturgis, to a report of a bicycle accident.

Preliminary crash information indicates a 2017 Harley-Davidson FLTRXS motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Pleasant Valley Road when the driver lost control. The 56-year-old driver was lightly injured and taken to Sturgis Hospital. She was not wearing a helmet.

One injured after losing control of bike at west end of Sturgis
STURGIS, SD – Shortly before 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sturgis authorities were called to the intersection of Lazelle and 14th streets, near the city’s westernmost Interstate exit, to a report of a bicycle accident .

Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2005 Harley-Davidson XL883C motorcycle was traveling west on Lazelle Street when it lost control. The 48-year-old driver was slightly injured but was not transported. He was wearing a helmet.

Moto, cash seizures stay at zero
STURGIS, SD — In the first four days of the rally, the South Dakota Highway Patrol has yet to seize any vehicles or money from participants.

Although no vehicles were seized in the first three days of last year, authorities seized more than $1,800 in cash.
