As of August 2022, she is ranked No. 13 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). She is currently the Lululemon Activewear Ambassador. Off the court, Leylah enjoys spending time at home in Miami with her father, a former professional soccer player, her Filipino-Canadian mother, and her younger sister Bianca, who also plays tennis.

What is a sport, fitness or wellness activity that you enjoy and how did you get started?

Tennis is the sport that I love and I had the chance to make it my job. I started playing tennis when I was five and did other sports growing up. My father was a professional footballer and taught me how to play at a very young age. One day, however, I decided to give tennis a try, and I fell in love with it when I picked up the racquet.

What are its benefits and what do you like about it?

One of the benefits of playing tennis is that it’s a sport you can play for a lifetime. So many people play into their 70s or even 80s. All you need is one racketa tennis ball, and a partner to play with. I love that tennis has given me a platform to inspire younger generations and show them that you can achieve your goals if you work hard and are dedicated.

How often do you do it and with whom?

I play tennis almost every day and have done so since I started serious competition at the age of 10. I love playing with my sister Bianca, a tennis player, and my father, who coaches me.

Was there a point you wanted to give up? Why? How did you bounce back?

As a professional athlete, I regularly face challenges. Whether it’s underperforming or losing a match, waking up really early to train, or trying to come back from an injury – something I’m dealing with right now – there’s always obstacles to overcome. I like to remind myself that I am an example for younger generations of athletes, including my sister, and that it is important to show them how to be resilient.

What equipment/tools/clothing do you need or wear when engaging in a sport or wellness activity?

I wear lululemon on and off the pitch in training and competition. i like them Wunder Train Leggings for HIIT workoutsand I love to play in any of their tank tops and skirts. Once in a while I will wear a tennis dress also for tournaments. My racket of choice is a Babolat Pure Aero. Gatorade The products are also an essential tool for hydration and energy during matches. I love their electrolyte stamina powder and caffeine energy gels.

Please share with us one thing you learned about the sport or what you would like others to learn about it.

Tennis taught me to be independent, to rely on myself and to be resilient. It also allowed me to make new friends and learn about different cultures around the world.

As a well-known character, what is one way you inject positivity into the audience?

I try to inspire young athletes and show them that their goals and dreams are achievable as long as they focus and work hard. I also believe in the importance of giving back and helping those in need, and I align myself with brands that also prioritize these values. Finally, my parents raised me to be kind to everyone I meet – opponents on the tennis court, fans and coaches – and I do my best to practice this every day.
