Manchester United are “waiting” for Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia to approve a move to Old Trafford after the Dutch club confirmed a fee had been agreed.
United have accelerated their interest in Malacia in a bid to beat Lyon in a deal worth around £13m.
Feyenoord manager Frank Arnesen has confirmed United’s late attempt to eye Lyon for the Dutch international’s signature, telling 1908NL: “The deal with Man United is there. We are now waiting for Tyrell.
“If Malacia says yes, then a move to Manchester United is imminent.”
Erik ten Hag had scouted the 22-year-old heavily as Ajax head coach, liking his speed, positional awareness, high interception rate and ability to attack from space.
Malacia fits the player profile the Dutchman wants at Old Trafford and he shares an agency – HCM Sports Management – with Frenkie de Jong; the club’s first goal this summer. The same agency also represents Donny van de Beek and Victor Lindelof.
Talks are progressing well on an initial £56m deal for the Barcelona midfielder, which has allowed United to pivot to other players on a shortlist for their rebuild.
United returned to pre-season training this week, with Ten Hag taking charge of his first session with the club’s players.
Analysis: Malacia can change the way United attack
Sky Sports News reporter Anton Toloui:
“It’s interesting, left-back is where Man United are stacked up nicely. There isn’t necessarily a desperate need for them.
“One person I talk to says he’s the best left-back in the Eredivisie. Malacia is fast, quick and likes to get forward. You see a lot of flashy recovery tackles which look great but which bother me. also worry when a defender has to step back.
“He puts in so much yardage that he can’t wait to get involved in the game in the future, which is something Man United fans want to see. I understand why United are interested in such a dynamic player who can change the way you to attack.”
Man Utd close to De Jong deal
Discussions continue on the finer details of a deal for De Jong and there is still work to be done, but there seems to be increased confidence that a deal can be done.
Personal terms shouldn’t be a problem for the midfielder, who made 46 appearances for Barcelona last season and has four years left on his current deal at Camp Nou.
De Jong played under new United boss Erik ten Hag at Ajax and was part of the squad that achieved the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup double in the 2018/19 campaign, as well as the semi-finals. Champions League finals.
His potential arrival at Old Trafford comes at just the right time, with Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba having already left this summer, leaving the club out of options in the middle of the park.
How De Jong can help Ten Hag bring the Ajax approach to Man Utd
If Man Utd are to play the ‘dominant and dictating’ football that Erik ten Hag wants, their midfield needs an upgrade. Frenkie de Jong could be a solution, writes Sky Sports’ Peter Smith.
The sleek midfielder does his best from deep, overcoming challenges or passing through the lines to get his team up the pitch.
He rarely gives the ball away. He had a 91% success rate in La Liga last season and, in addition to that metric, also eclipsed McTominay and Fred in stats measuring dribbling success, quality of touch and how often they are stripped.
De Jong might not be the only answer to United’s problems, but he would bring an upgrade to their central midfield department and unlock a way to play Ten Hag’s desires.
