Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has been working hard this week, well, busier than usual. The Blues’ new leader is looking to make major changes to Thomas Tuchel’s squad in the week leading up to the 2022/23 Premier League campaign. Although this may seem late given that Chelsea start from Goodison Park in less than five days, there is still almost a full month left in the transfer window. There’s plenty of time to improve so the Blues are apparently exploring all avenues before it’s too late.
Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana is one of the people who have caught the club’s attention. Fofana has been linked with Chelsea for a few weeks now but nothing concrete has developed due to Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers insisting the defender is not for sale. Leicester City have reportedly slapped an £80m price tag on their head in hopes it will deter the Blues. However, when Boehly and Tuchel want something, money doesn’t seem to be an issue. As the weeks pass and the ties remain, there is a growing possibility of this movement happening.
Chelsea target Wesley Fofana drops massive Leicester City transfer hint
While the Foxes’ stance remains unchanged in public, it looks like the defender has done his part behind closed doors. Fofana fell a major transfer hint on Tuesday morning when he changed his bios on social media (Instagram and Twitter). It may sound silly, but the message behind the changes is significant. Spaces that previously read “Professional Player at Leicester City” now simply read “Professional Player”.
Either the Frenchman does his part to move the needle from within or he plays a bad joke on the Blues. This saga apparently only ends in two ways: Fofana gets his big money transfer to Chelsea or the club is once again humiliated with a transfer in the public eye. The Blues have already been eyed by Barcelona twice for Raphinha and Jules Kounde, so a centre-half playing games with them wouldn’t sit well with the fans.
Luckily for Chelsea, these moves have always caught on in the past. The Foxes have reluctantly sold N’Golo Kante, Danny Drinkwater and Ben Chilwell to the Blues over the past decade. Fofana could soon be the latest big mover to join this intriguing list of promising players to move to west London.
Chelsea have been interested in the player since he burst onto the Premier League scene a few seasons ago as a core part of Rodgers’ defence. A serious leg injury put the chase on hold and Fofana’s signing of a new contract complicated matters considerably. Nonetheless, after missing a plethora of other defensive targets, the Blues are determined to make a splash before the window slams shut. Adding a promising 21-year-old to an aging backline full of experienced veterans would be the perfect move to prepare them for the future and please the fans.
Fofana has been said to be excited about the possibility of a transfer, so these latest moves could finally bring the two clubs to the negotiating table. Leicester City have struggled to sell players elsewhere, with Youri Tielemans not attracting the interest the Foxes thought he would. Moreover, they seem unwilling to leave James Maddison. Fofana could end up being the one to leave as his high profile transfer would help Leicester City fund a few inbound deals. Even if Rodgers doesn’t want to let him go, everyone involved in the deal could come out on top if Chelsea were to meet the Foxes around their asking price.
