Which driver is closest to a race ban?

Several drivers have quite a few penalty points to their name, putting them at risk of a race ban if they have a few more incidents.

Formula 1’s penalty point system is designed to control the behavior of drivers on the track, much like that of a normal road user trying to avoid getting points on their driving licence.

In F1, penalty points are awarded for driver transgressions, with the amount varying depending on the severity of the incident. If a driver accumulates 12 points within a 12 month period, the driver incurs a one-race ban.

So far in F1 no driver has broken this rule. However, in Formula 2, Amaury Cordeel was recently banned from the Silverstone round after picking up 12 points in just six race weekends. It was the first ban since Mahaveer Raghunathan was left out of the Austrian round in 2019.

Let’s see which drivers have to watch out for the rest of this year…

F1 Drivers’ Championship leader Max Verstappen is one of the co-leaders of the unenviable points table, with the reigning world champion on seven points.

However, all of those points are set to expire for the rest of this season, meaning it’s Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll who have to watch their backs more due to their latest penalties.

With three drivers out of seven points, there is also a trio out of six – one of whom has only returned to the grid this year.

At the other end of the table, Ferrari have the cleanest drivers at present – neither Charles Leclerc nor Carlos Sainz have points, while Haas’ Mick Schumacher has also kept a clean nose.
